Confirm what this edition should contain
Use the component list for your copy’s edition and language. Product photographs may show promotional items, another edition or an expansion. A review of a similar box is not a reliable inventory for the one you own. Find the list in the included rules or on the publisher’s official page.
Check whether the game deliberately includes spares or uses different quantities in different scenarios. Count the full supply, not only the pieces laid out for one player count. An unused component is not necessarily an extra, and a setup diagram may show fewer items than the complete box contains.
Search the packaging methodically
Empty one compartment at a time onto a clear surface. Inspect beneath removable inserts, inside bag folds and between nested trays. Open folded paper and boards carefully. Small cardboard tokens can remain attached to a punchboard that appeared empty at first glance.
Keep checked groups separate from unchecked ones. Otherwise a loose pile can be counted twice or returned to the wrong compartment. Use a shallow tray for tiny pieces so the search does not create another missing item. Do not sweep everything into one large bag simply to make the box look tidy.
Reconstruct the previous session
Look at the table, floor and temporary surfaces used during the last game. Check travel bags and any shared component trays. If the game was played elsewhere, ask a specific question about the missing item rather than sending a vague request to look for “a small piece”. A photograph of a matching component may help.
If several games were used in the same evening, inspect the most plausible neighbouring boxes. Similar cubes, coins and markers can be packed together accidentally. Keep the search targeted; opening an entire collection at once may make it harder to track what has already been checked.
Identify the piece before contacting support
Record the game title, edition, language and component name from the rulebook. Include the quantity missing and any relevant part number or card identifier. If the component has two different sides, describe both. A clear photograph of the inventory page or a matching piece can clarify the request where the publisher accepts attachments.
Keep order details available, but submit them only through the publisher’s or retailer’s appropriate support channel when requested. Do not post purchase records or personal information in a public discussion simply to prove ownership. Support procedures differ, so use the current instructions on the official site.
Treat a temporary substitute as a temporary arrangement
For some public markers, a clearly distinguishable substitute may let a home group continue. Discuss it and check that it does not alter information, size-dependent movement or random selection. A replacement for a hidden card or a token drawn blindly is more difficult: a different back, shape or feel can reveal its identity.
Do not assume a printable image or homemade token is equivalent in every game. If the missing component affects fairness or a scenario’s operation, waiting for an appropriate solution may be preferable. Keep the temporary item labelled so it is not later mistaken for an original component during a sale or loan.
Update the box after the issue is resolved
When a replacement arrives or the original is found, return it to its proper group and remove obsolete notes. If the piece was repeatedly escaping a compartment, improve that part of the storage arrangement. Solving the cause makes the next search less likely.
